Overview

I arrived in Sturgeon Bay, WI, in October 1969. The ship was still under construction at Peterson Shipbuilder's yards.

I no longer remember how much of the crew was already in Sturgeon Bay. More than half? I could use some help remembering who joined up with the ship when. Send me email at tomd@mactom.com if you have any info.

None of us lived on the ship at that time, of course. The crew was scattered around in apartments and rooms throughout Sturgeon Bay. I spent my first week or so in a tiny room over Lipsky's Bar & Grill, then moved into an apartment with Tom Huntington, and a couple of other folks (sorry, cannot remember who). Tom was a rather slender guy who lived on Pepsi. The apartment was crisscrossed by chains made of Pepsi pop-tops.

The person whose memory stands out the most from that period was Wilbur T. Edwards, who was to be my boss for quite some time. He was a great guy from Georgia who loved "fissin" more than just about anything. He had a "brand new black 1963 (?) Valiant" rattletrap that he bought in Sturgeon Bay. Taking a ride with him out to his favorite fishing spot on the lake was about the only way I managed to see more than the few blocks between the apartment and the shipyard.

I think a few more folks trickled in before we left for the Boston shipyard at the end of November. At least one person did not stay with the ship until commissioning, the original cook.

I believe that this is most of the crew. This picture also appeared in the commissioning program. Some may not have been in Sturgeon Bay for this picture. If you know of commissioning crew that are not in the picture, let me know.

The folks listed in the table with a grey background are listed on the PGRA Missing Personnel List. If you know their whereabouts, will you please send the information to Terry McManuels at the Patrol Gunboat Riders Association?

Also, I have lost contact with John Phillip "Zippy" Zimmerman, who came aboard the U.S.S. Green Bay shortly after commissioning as a Radarman Apprentice. Phil grew up in St. Charles, MO, and would be in his early 50's now. Any information would be appreciated.

At commissioning the ship's cook was CS2 Dale D. Smith. When I first arrived in Sturgeon Bay in October of 1969 the ship's cook was CS-something Thomas Manning.
