Overview

The U.S.S. Green Bay (PG-101) did public relations service, such as giving tours to the public. The Green Bay always seemed to be a hit with the tourists. It was a very cool looking ship, ya know. Also, the PG's were small enough to pull into ports that did not normally get US Navy ships.

We also pulled into ports where there were Navy facilities that also rarely got visits from ships. We visited Monterey, CA, home of the Naval War College, and Annapolis, home of the Naval Academy.

Whoever had duty during a civilian open house played tour guide. I did it a couple of times, which was very nerve wracking since I was terminally shy in those days. As I remember it, the spiel started out something like,

"The ship is 165 feet long, 23 and a half feet wide with a fully loaded displacement of 230 tons. It has a crew of thirty men and officers. Armament includes a 3" 50 caliber forward, a 40mm aft, and two twin 50 caliber machine guns on the 01 level. It is powered by twin diesels for normal cruising and a gas turbine for high speed cruising. The ship is capable of speeds in excess of 45 knots ..."

If have forgotten most of the yada yada now, but for years after leaving the Navy I would break into the tour-guide routine whenever someone asked me about the ship.

Tour Pamphlet

Here is one of the pamphlets handed out to the tourists, along with a few other items. This tour guide was apparently used when we were stationed in San Diego. Was probably used some place like Monterey, CA, home of the U.S. Naval Post Graduate School, which is famous among us nerds as the place where Gary Kildall wrote the first version of the first popular microcomputer operating system, CP/M, while teaching there.

Mayport Florida

On one of our stops in Mayport, FL, we were traveling with the U.S.S. Beacon (PG-99) and the U.S.S. Surprise (PG-97). We tied up near the Queen Mary (or is it the Queen Elizabeth?). Did not normally have a sense that the PG's were small, but tying up next to a huge liner like that made us feel SMALL.
