I am deeply indebted to Don for introducing me to the application of "natural" science methodology to the behavior of organisms, for many heated and enjoyable arguments (in which he argued the wrong side, of course), and for his personal support. I do miss him.
Gloria easily contributed as much to my behavior analytic training as any faculty member, besides being a very fine friend. I am very grateful for her professional and personal support.
Comment: No longer remember who said it, but I was told that this acknowledgement ticked off some faculty. Nonetheless, Gloria and I spent a trememdous amount of time discussing Behavior Analysis, far more time than I spent in such discussions with any faculty member. These were among the most intellectually challenging and stimulating discussions of my life. Ahhh, nostalgia strikes!
I thank Andy Lattal, Linda Parrott, and Barry Edelstein for their time, assistance, and understanding. Special thanks to Linda, who functioned as my advisor after Don's death and as a friend always.
This thesis report was written, defended, and revised while I worked full time for Julie. I am very grateful to Julie for her generous support in terms of very flexible work hours, the use of a Macintosh for word processing, and personal encouragement. This thesis might have taken years longer without her help.
I am grateful to my parents for my early and continuing interest in science and technology. The technical skills I acquired with their enouragement have served me well in my behavior analytic and computer science endeavors. While life with my parents was never very peachy, I feel fortunate to have been reared by two of the most irreverent, unpretentious, and bizarre people I have ever met.
